The Arts Societies offer members opportunities to take part in a variety of voluntary activities. TAS Croydon is one of only a few societies in the area that has a Church Recording Group which is one of the most important voluntary activities. Church Recording was initiated by the Victoria and Albert Museum as it felt that not enough was known about our church heritage. A Group works on one church at a time and records, in a standardised form together with photographs, physical details of each object together with its history and associations. This frequently requires research in libraries and record offices or contacting recognised experts. Information not known to members of the church may be unearthed. No special expertise is required as training is available from other recorders and special training days.

The Society has already recorded five churches in the south of the borough, the most recent was St Mary the Blessed Virgin, at Addington. These photographs show the church and some of the artefacts we found and recorded there.

In September 2011 we started recording St John the Evangelist, Shirley. If you are interested in helping in this project phone Brenda Deans on 020 8657 2056
